Onyx's story has just started, and it has already changed for the better. On Wednesday, August 14th, Onyx happened to get the attention of some friends of mine. They contacted me, and I rushed down to the store where they were waiting. There, I saw a little black kitten, taking in as much attention as she could get, all while being very loud.
In that moment, I decided that I was back in the rescue business—something I had not done since before I moved here. The need was apparent; I just worried about the financial situation I was in. And when I decided to try getting back into it, there was some pushback. But there are now ten times as many stray and feral cats in my neighborhood.
So, I made the choice, and Onyx came home with me.
I quickly set up Maggie's old crate with some fresh food, clean water, and some bedding. Maggie and I made a quick trip to the store and bought a new litter box and some litter. Soon, Onyx had a little comfortable quarantine bedroom of her own. Standard practice is two weeks of quarantine and limiting contact with any other animals.
Now, Maggie and Onyx have already become friends, though their contact is limited. Whenever Maggie comes into the house, she goes and checks on this little kitten. Onyx is eating well and cleaning up nicely. Initially, she had some sort of tar in her tail and paws, but I have been able to clean that up, and most of it is gone.
Onyx gets playtime with me twice a day, where she is out of the crate. I use pet-safe wipes to clean her fur, and Onyx loves the interaction. She has been described as a "fuss-pot" by some friends across the pond, and their cat, Smudgy, has spent some time watching Onyx in her latest video.
Onyx's first veterinary appointment is on Thursday, and I will stream an update video on Twitch after I get home and know more.
